Abstract

Characiformes are exclusively freshwater fish, being one of the dominant groups among fishes from South America; they have highlighted importance of subsistence and commercial fishing, aquariofilia and in general ecology of ecosystems. The characid Astyanax rivularis (Lütken, 1875), popularly known by piava or lambari, is part of the species classified as Incertae Sedis and is widely distributed in rivers of the São Francisco River basin, which cross Serra da Canastra, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Considering that reproductive strategy is the set of characteristics that individuals of the same species show, and those who live in environments with different conditions may present reproductive tactics, which is characterized by variable performance in the pattern in response to environmental changes, this study aim to define the ovarian reproductive classes of A. rivularis, based on morphological characterization of oogenesis and verify a comparative analysis of the gonadal development of specimens captured in different environments along São Francisco River, Serra da Canastra, Brazil. Thus, adult and female specimens of A. rivularis were collected at four different points of the São Francisco River Basin in May 2011, being their total length and weight measured, the gonads were removed, weighed, and fragments were fixed. Then they will be processed according to protocols for light microscopy.
