Abstract

The project aims to investigate the construction of historical narratives published in the first half of the nineteenth century in the United States of America. Especially, we intend to analyze the use of historical fiction in the works of three American writers: Washington Irving (1783-1859), James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) and William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859). The goal is to understand how and why such writers used the resources of historical prose fiction to represent the uniqueness of the American colonial past, such as the episode of the American Revolution and other events related to indigenous peoples. One goal is to scale the weight of the "colonial legacy" in the formation of British American literature postcolonial as opposed to the Iberian experience in the same period. The authors chosen amply treated the problem of frontier expansion into the West, however, this project will seek to highlight other boundaries, such as the discursive frontiers (between fiction and historical narration) and inter-imperial frontiers (as interrogating such narratives represented the empires Iberoamerican vis-à-vis the British Empire).
