Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the images constructed by the Chicago Tribune newspaper about the United States and Latin America during the 1893 Universal Exposition. The Chicago World's Fair, commemorating the four hundredth anniversary of the landing of Christopher Columbus in America, is a landmark event of the United States in the late nineteenth century, period of profound economic and social transformation. These changes also affected the press, which began to adopt new techniques, styles and address new matters. Planned to be an "illustrated encyclopedia of civilization", the Chicago World's Fair gathered several nations interested in presenting and displaying symbols from their progress and presumed vocations to the world. It is noteworthy the active participation of Latin American countries, which displaced a significant amount of financial and human resources to take part in the United States event - stimulated by the Pan-American policy led by Secretary of State James Blaine.
