Assessment of cardiovascular risk markers in obese adolescents

Abstract

Currently, obesity is a public health issue worldwide. Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics 2010 showed that among adolescents, 21.7% of boys and 19.4% of girls are overweight. In addition, 5.9% of male adolescents are obese, compared to 4% of girls.Obesity is a chronic metabolic disorder that is associated with future atherosclerotic disease, with increased rates of morbidity and mortality, which not only inflammation causes endothelial dysfunction, but also triggers the cell proliferation and migration, oxidative stress, apoptosis, necrosis and thrombosis cell.Will be investigated risk factors related to complications of obesity in puberty in both genders, by measuring lipid profile, oral glucose tolerance test, intima-media thickness of carotid measurement, evaluating intramyocellular fat by nuclear magnetic resonance, dosing cortisol/cortisone ratio by high-performance liquid chromatography and ICAM-1 by ELISA.For analysis between distinct an independent groups will be used the Student t test. To determine the degree of association between two variables will be used Spearman Rank Correlation.Early detection of risk of atherosclerotic disease will enable a better guidance and intervention on the eating habits and physical activity routine for prevention and reduction of risks for cardiovascular disease, decreasing morbidity and mortality in adulthood.
