Abstract

The Greek Magical Papyri are a collection of greek-roman texts about magic discovered in Egypt. Among its texts, we can find several spells that have the so-called voces magicae: words with no apparent lexical meaning but with magical power. This research tries to analize how these words are used syntactically and in its contexts. Three uses will be analized at first: vocative position, autonomous use and magic words as the second term of invocation. After the analysis and comparison of each use of the magic words, the most significant spells will be translated to serve as examples for the uses of voces magicae.
