Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNT), especially the functionalized ones, have been added to polymer matrixes due to its mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. The incorporation of CNTs to high density polyethylene (HDPE) can improve the matrix properties, but it changes the crystallization/melting process as well. The study of crystallization/melting of polymers is very important, since it affects the ending properties of the nanocomposite. Moreover, several process variables can interfere in the actual role of the CNT reinforcement in the HDPE. Therefore, the objective of this project is to study the influence of three process variables in the viscoelastics of CNT/HDPE nanocomposites: the CNT amount, functionalization type and mixing power. The samples will be prepared by mechanical agitation of the melting polymer and cast by compression. The viscoelastic properties and the homogeneity will be studied as well. The relationship between this information will give support to better understand the CNT/HDPE interactions and make clear how these process variables can change the crystallization process of these nanocomposites.
