Abstract

The goal of this study is to identify the main incidents related to medication preparation and administration through enteral probe. It is a cross sectional, descriptive and explanatory research, with a quantitative approach. The study will be conducted at the general ward of a hospital in São Paulo state. The research will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase a data collection instrument will be developed based on the literature review, on others instruments, and on publications about the theme. The instrument will include issues related to the drugs and the techniques employed by the nursing staff during the processes of medication preparation and administration through the enteral probe. In the second phase we will conduct direct observation of the nurses during medication preparation and administration through the enteral probe during 30 days. Afterwards, the data of the administrated drugs will be compared with the medical prescription in order to identify and categorize the medication incidents, according to the International Classification for Patient Safety proposed by the World Health Organization. We hope that the results of this study may contribute to the development of protocols designed for medication preparation and administration through enteral probe, in a near future.
