Abstract

Mycoplasma suis is a pathogenic bacteria which is found attached to porcine erythrocytes, causing damage to parasitized cells. This parasite, belonging to haemotrophic mycoplasmas (haemoplasmas) group in Order Mollicutes, is incriminated as the etiologic agent of porcine haemoplasmosis. This disease shows a worldwide distribution, occurring in swine of all ages. Parasitized pigs show severe haemolytic or mild anemia, infertility and immunosuppression, causing economic losses and affecting animal welfare. The acute phase of porcine haemoplasmosis is associated to intense parasitemia; sometimes is fatal to piglets, growing pigs and pregnant sows. The chronic phase of the disease is often characterized by asymptomatic infections or by a large variety of clinic conditions including anemia, mild icterus, low performance of newborn piglets, poor reproduction and growing pigs performance. The diagnosis of M. suis by molecular methods is much needed, because these techniques show higher sensitivity and specificity. The goal of this study is to investigate the occurrence of M. suis in pigs raising in extensive farms in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, using quantitative real time PCR.
