Abstract

Spreadsheets are popular among users and organizations, becoming an essential data management tool. The easy of access associated with the creation freedom offered by spreadsheets resulted in the increase of the data volume available in this format. However, spreadsheets are not conceived to be interoperable and challenges arise involving systematization of processes to reuse and combine their data. Many related initiatives are addressing data interoperability focusing on lexical and syntactical aspects, however, the exploration of the semantics related to these data in spreadsheets is still an open challenge. Large part of related work recognizes the semantics of spreadsheets only through its isolated attributes, not even considering the disposition of these attributes in the structure nor the domain in which they are inserted. Our proposal differs by considering these aspects are essential to trace shared practices by communities. We believe that through these elements we can identify construction patterns to be recognized in a data extraction process and explicit schemas, allowing characterization of the general purpose of a spreadsheet and achieving a semantically richer description. This is the central topic of this research, to be developed in the PhD Program in Computer Science at the Institute of Computing - Unicamp.
