Abstract

In the last years the electrospinning has been in evidence by their applications in some areas, and also by presented a considerable potential of continuous scale processing. In this research project will be studied the electrospinning process of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), aiming to obtain appropriated precursors in order to manufacture high performance carbon nanofibers. The thorough knowledge of mechanisms and variables that interfere in electrospinning process is very important to the development of this technology, mainly because of the possibility to obtain high-value added materials. The procedures and characterization techniques, such as, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and others, will be essentials to do detailed assessment of the produced samples. Being the main precursor of carbon fiber, PAN presents propitious characteristics to obtain good quality materials, because by its high-yield carbon. As noted in recent publications, the use of electrospinning to obtain PAN based nanofibers have been roused the interesting of some research groups. The project also provides collaboration with researchers from ICT-UNIFESP specialized in polymer synthesis. Therefore, it will be possible to promote the synergy between the specialties, making stronger the research group, propelling the development of new materials, mainly, preceded by renewed sources, thus reducing the dependence on petroleum and foreign manufactures.
