Abstract

Breathing is an essential homeostatic neural process, regulating levels of O2 and CO2 in blood and tissues, which are crucial for life. It is well known that central and peripheral chemoreceptors sense changes in these gases and communicate this information to cardiorespiratory centers to regulate breathing and sympathetic activity outflow to ensure adequate ventilation-perfusion matching in tissues (Feldman et al. 2003). Disruption of chemoreceptor drive has been associated with a number of cardiorespiratory problems including sleep apnea (Dempsey et al., 2010), sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (Kinney et al., 2009) and hypertension (Zoccal et al., 2007; Dempsey et al., 2010). However, despite concerted investigation the cellular and molecular basis for central chemoreception has yet to be fully elucidated, and the neural basis for integration of central and peripheral chemosensory inputs within the medulla remains unresolved. The proposed research will try to identify a crucial role of purinergic signaling in peripheral chemoreception, and in doing so offers new potential therapeutic avenues for the treatment of cardiorespiratory control disorders.
