Abstract The subfamily Arctiinae is a highly speciose group of moths in the neotropics, with many cases of complex host plant associations and Müllerian mimicry rings. During 2010 and 2011 I did a biodiversity study on the Arctiinae alonga mountain slope in the region of Serra do Mar, Paraná State, Brazil. The results motivated this project which the main purposes are to refine the taxonomical identifications of the species found in Serra do Mar and to clarify the phylogenetic relationships within the Arctiinae tribes. This phylogeny can be used to understand the evolutionary processes that shaped the assemblages in Serra do Mar and also in conservation planning. In addition, I intend to study a temporal dataset of species richness and abundance for the superfamily Noctuoidea in southern Brazil, obtained during the occurrence of the climatic phenomenon El Niño Southern Oscilation (1997-1998).I hope,in the event that his project is approved, the results will help to improve knowledge on taxonomy, evolution and ecology of the Arctiinae and other Noctuoidea taxa in Brazil.
