Abstract

This proposal aims to analyze the implications of sugarcane industry expansion in Western of São Paulo state. Particularly the effects on family farms in two different regions, which are the Pontal of Paranapanema and Northwest of São Paulo state. Despite the similarities, these regions have different processes of socio-spatial formation; as well, the agriculture structure, the production and also socio-political dynamics. The common point between these areas is that both them present a significantly economy and socially important. Although, this segment of agriculture still present distinct characteristics. The Pontal of Paranapanema is characterized by the social movements struggling for land. In this area most of family farmers is settled in the projects of "agrarian reform". In the Northwest of São Paulo State family farm consists of conventional small owners, with few rural settlements and not expressive social actions. In this sense, we search for understanding the similarities, differences and intensities of the effects resulting from the expansion of the sugarcane industry from the 2000s in both regions; as well to understand the form of resistance to this process from the family farm.
