Abstract This research aims to analyze the presence of Latin American mail art in the constitution of conceptual art collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, University of São Paulo (MAC-USP) during the 1970s. Are addressed both the artwork of this collection, as well as the participation of the museum in the network of mail artists. The mail art is a movement made by the exchange of information and artwork using couriers. These contacts comprise a network of supranational coordination with the participation of artists from the five continents. This network is based on solidarity between its members, denying practices appellants in conventional art circuit as regulatory mechanisms, hierarchies, selection criteria and commercialization of artwork. In Latin America, the mail art has his political character especially pronounced, present both in the selected theme as well as in the marginalization of this circuit. This Latin American production starts in the 1970s and remains in the 1980s, providing an alternative strategy to the censorship and resistance to the military dictatorships brought. During this period, the MAC-USP, headed by its director Professor Walter Zanini, has an important role in the mail art, promoting the network locally, filing papers received and promoting exhibitions.
