Abstract

The indian policy was officially undefined in Brazil in the second decade of the nineteenth century: even though the issue has been discussed during the General Constituent Assembly of 1823, it was not determined a set of rules to guide the treatment of the natives of the country in this period. However, many documents were dispatched at that time which, directly or indirectly, sought to solve the Indian question. The present study aims to analyze the indigenous question in São Paulo during the period from 1824 to 1834, when the governament councils of that province and were active and in which in the period the São Paulo press emerged. It will be researched in the minutes of the Council Presidency and the General Council of the São Paulo province and in the journals that circulated during the years delimited. Moreover, it will be used memories Arouche José Toledo Rendon Veloso and Antônio Rodrigues de Oliveira, as well as the project of José Bonifácio, documents that were produced between 1822 and 1823. This study seeks to understand the means of treatment of the Indians defended by São Paulo during the years featured, considering that the arguments used may represent part of certain thought developed in the nineteenth century in this country.
