Abstract

Considering the increase of oil production in our country for the coming years and that corrosion problems are frequent in this type of industry, this project aims to add knowledge concerning the corrosive processes caused by oil in pipelines. In the study of internal corrosion of pipelines the scientific community has paid attention mainly to the presence of aqueous phase decanted into tanks and pipelines, however is very important to take in mind the synergistic effect of all corrosive species present in petroleum. Among these species, this project proposes to study the effect of the three main: sea water, naphthenic acids and sulfides. For a better understanding experimental design and chemometric techniques will be used, and to simulate a chemical condition closer to reality mineral oil will be used as solvent and steel grade API 5L X. To the study we will use the techniques of in-situ optical microscopy coupled with electrochemical noise, in-situ atomic force microscopy, in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with electrochemical techniques, and measures of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Thus it will be possible to qualify and quantify the type of corrosion according the composition of the oil.
