Abstract

The ability to stay upright on two feet is the precursor of any daily life activity. Balance ability decreases with aging with profound impact on quality of life of the elderly population and a high cost to the society. A person's balance can be evaluated by measuring the body sway during quiet standing, a technique known as stabilography. The aim of this project is to study the balance in elderly and young adults for the creation of an open database of stabilometric signals. An open database of stabilometric signals will allow different research groups in the world to test new methods of analysis with the same standard data, increasing the objectivity of the comparisons. With this project, we want to contribute to the improvement of techniques to describe balance and to the development of new methods of analysis. This project fits in the science paradigm known as Open Science and Big Data. As the raw data produced by this study will be available in an open and free way, we predict that this database will have a good impact in the scientific community. (AU)
