Abstract Flow visualization techniques have been useful tools for understanding the complex phenomena associated to flow movement. Utilizing only the visual observation, LEONARDO DA VINCI made beautiful sketches about waves, free jets and bluff bodies wakes. Other famous fluid dynamics researchers - BERNOULLI, PASCAL, REYNOLDS, PRANDTL e ROSHKO - also used flow visualization. Nowadays, experimental flow visualization remains an important research toll. In the present work, an experimental study of the flow around elliptical cylinders with several slender ratios has been carried out in several flow regimes. All tests have been performed out in a vertical low turbulence hydrodynamic tunnel. Direct injection of liquid dye and aspersing of solid micro particles flow visualization techniques have been utilized. The flow images captured permit to identify several coherent flow structures, recirculations and boundary layer detachments. | |
