Abstract

The ubiquity of artificial and natural radionuclides in different environmental matrices can utilized as a tool in oceanographic studies, as these nuclides record processes in spatial and temporal scales according to their levels and spatial and vertical distribution in sediments. Within this context, this project aims to establish a set of methodologies for sampling, chemical analysis, data processing and oceanographic application of natural (K-40, Pb-210, Ra-226, Th-230, Th-232, U-235 and U-238) and artificial radionuclides (Cs-137, Pu-239 and Am-241) using gamma spectrometry technique. With these elements, chemical and mathematical modeling for dating and calculation of sedimentation rates, relationships between sediment parameters (such as particle size) and origin and destination of marine sediments will be studied. A large set of sediment samples of diverse origins will be used, surface samples and cores from coastal and deep water oceanographic systems will be used. In addition, it will proposed a new methodology for the determination of artificial radionuclides (Pu-239 and Am-241 ) in sediments through gamma spectrometry. (AU)
