Abstract

A high impact application of metals with amorphous structure, based on their outstanding mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance, is as coating of components requiring high resistance to wear and corrosion. This project for Scientific Initiation aims to experimental evaluation of the glass forming ability, GFA, of two new compositions based on FeCrNbB system (Fe58Cr10Nb8B24 and Fe56Cr12Nb8B24). These two alloys are candidates to be applied as a coating with amorphous structure on steel substrates which, having high Cr content (higher than those reported in the literature) have perspective to produce a coating with superior corrosion resistance. The strategy is the preparation of the two alloys with high compositional precision and processing by rapid solidification in the form of ribbons with thicknesses of tens of microns and wedge-shaped bulk samples. The goals are to confirm the ability of formation of amorphous structure of the two selected alloys and establishing which of the two has higher GFA and quantification of the maximum thickness of sample produced by casting in cooper mould with amorphous structure for each of the two compositions.
