Abstract

Linked to the objectives of the research "The Symbolism in Mercure de France (1890-1898)", this proposal for the student teaching program (BEPE) aims to look more closely to the studies about the Mercure de France, as far as it concerns to the French literary scene and its possible presence in the Brazilian literature. For this, we will investigate the book reviews that appear in the section "Les livres", in 1890, when the publication began to be managed by Alfred Vallette, and "Épilogues", "Roman" and "Poèmes" that appear in the section "Revue du mois", in 1898. We intend to establish a comparative analysis between the position of the Mercure de France and the oeuvres that circulated in the beginning of the 1890's and also in its fin-de-siècle moment. We will try to elucidate the way these writers and authors reveal us the trajectory of the literature from that period, and if Symbolism was in force in a renowned review. Besides, we have the intention to study in depth Remy de Gourmont, Rachilde, Henri de Régnier and Pierre Quillard, who signed "Épilogues", "Roman" and "Poèmes" in the section "Revue du mois", considering their role as collaborators on Mercure de France and of possible members of groups which made public new incursions in literature in that period. At last, this proposal will enable to carry out a survey about Alfred Vallette's production and biography, and also to examine the documents that certificate the activities of the Mercure and its establishment as publishing house. The student teaching program in France will occur in the Studies Centre RIRRA 21 ("Représenter et inventer la réalité du romantisme à l'aube du XXIe siècle"), under the supervision of the French literature professor Marie-Ève Thérenty (Université de Montpellier III).
