Abstract

This project for research abroad - which arises as a continuation of the project for the Doctoral Scholarship in the country, where we discuss the role of Mary Dascomb in Brazilian education - proposes to contact the fellow with Prof. Dr. Luz Sanfeliu Gimeno, from the Department d' Educació Comparada i Historia de l'Educació, from the University of Valencia. This visit will allow for contact with new historiographical approaches, linked to Gender and History of Education, especially in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, themes in which Gimeno specializes. In particular, we seek new possibilities of document analysis, since this university has an important Historical Documentation Center, where seminars and courses that are offered will enable a more fruitful analysis of the sources we have. The ideological characterization of society in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century in which femininity is represented and the male and female models are established, constitute a framework in which we question the life strategies of past characters, like Mary Dascomb. In the history of women, we try not only to recreate the thought patterns that were typical of the past, but also the way women and men were part of the culture of that time and how they built their lifestyle. In line with current trends in historiography, where macro-historical studies and general explanations are being replaced by more limited and more complex studies in producing explanations, these approaches are especially interesting for the history of women. Our goal is to bring to light the story of a woman who through her intellectual resources transformed her life experience and is now part of the history of education in Brazil. (AU)
