Abstract

Traditionally, exercise prescription is based only in relation to the external load, conversely, the physiological adaptations due to the physical training depends on the internal load. Thus, an appropriate exercise prescription, especially during group exercises, normally used for the elderly, should consider the internal load. However, aging leads to reduction in their interoception ability, placing into question the validity of one of the most used methods to quantify internal load, the method of perceived exertion (RPE). Thus, the purpose of this study is to compare the methods of internal load quantification using heart rate and RPE in the elderly population. Thirty elderly practitioners of two different exercise types (general fitness and resistance training) will be evaluated during a session of physical exercise. The method of Edwards will be used to determine the internal load by heart rate. To determine the internal load based on RPE the method of Foster will be used. The relationship between the methods will be determined using the Pearson correlation coefficient , both for each activity as well as for the participants as a whole. The significance value will P < 0.05 for all analyzes. (AU)
