Abstract

The proposed research intends to show Jacques Lacan's close yet ambiguous relationship with phenomenology. First, we shall seek to examine the French psychoanalyst's initial understanding of phenomenology as a philosophy of consciousness, with his main targets for criticism being Husserl, Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. Lacan's position towards Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology seems to eventually change, however, and so does his very understanding of phenomenology. Our working hypothesis is that he came to conceive of phenomenology as a form of transcendental philosophy. From this novel perspective, phenomenology seems to gain momentous importance within Lacan's intellectual experience. Ultimately, thus, our aim is to evaluate whether phenomenology was truly superseded by psychoanalysis and, should that indeed be the case, estimate what advantages a Lacanian perspective could bring to philosophy; we intend, additionally, to demonstrate how the dialogue between phenomenology and psychoanalysis - Lacanian psychoanalysis in particular - is not confined to the clinical dimension but, rather, currently and often revisited by thinkers operating within the field of philosophy. Far from merely revisiting said dialogue, then, our goal is to point out its current relevance, as well as the number of impasses it has bequeathed us. (AU)
