Abstract

Polypteriformes is one of the basalmost bony fish orders, including up to date 12 valid species on the genera Polypterus and Erpetoichthys. The group is morphologically very singular, combining both exclusive features, not seen in other extant bony fishes, and features shared by different basal lineages of Gnathostomata. As result, Polypteriformes have been subjected to several morphological studies throughout the years which, however, demand reviews in light of new interpretations about the homology of certain structures and about the phylogeny of Osteognathostomata, of new nomenclatural proposals, and of the new techniques of morphological investigation developed in recent years. Therefore, the present project have as it main objectives: (1) to study and describe at length the anatomy of Polypteriformes representatives, focusing on skeleton, musculature and innervations, providing comparisons of this data to those of other basal Gnathostomates (including fossils); (2) to elaborate an anatomic atlas of reference for the order, propounding an actualized nomenclature usage that attends to structural homology hypothesis for the structures; (3) to identify and elect both autapomorphies for the group and characters with phylogenetic signal to suggest hypothesis of relationship of the Polypteriformes members within each and with other Gnathostomata; and (4) to review and discuss critically the hypothesis of phylogenetic placement of Polypteriformes among other Osteognathostomata, in light of the new evidences identified in the work.
