Abstract

The transformations going through the contemporary family allows to evidence the homo-affective family. However, little is known about how parents and children who live in homosexual family arrangements experience the daily family life, how these families' structures work, and how they organize themselves to meet the needs of children who are in the development process. This study aims to understand the process of formation and organization of gay families constituted by male couples with children, in the perspective of parents and children. This is an exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study, supported by the qualitative approach and the methodological strategy of multiple case studies. The Queer Theory will be used to provide theoretical base to the study, offering a critical view, based on a non-personalized and non-essentialist perspective, on how the family studies from the perspective of Psychology, conceive gender and sexuality. The literature in the field of homo-affective parenting will also be used. Three homo-affective families with children will participate in the study, including the parental couple and their children, who may be adopted or biological (from previous heterosexual relationships). The instruments used will be: socio-demographic data form, semi-structured interview schedule to be held with each member of the participant family, semi-structured interview schedule to be held with the couple, genogram, Family Drawing (DF) for children from 7 to 14 years-old and semi-structured interview (besides DF) for those who are older than 14 years old. The material analysis will be performed according to thematic content analysis (interviews) and specific literature of the other instruments (DF and genogram). The results will be organized by means of triangulation between data obtained from the instruments' application. The goal is to discuss how gay families can be understood from the point of view of its protagonists, setting up a knowledge capable to substantiate proposals for clinical intervention in this context of development, and for the adoption of public policies coherent to the actual social change, in order to assist the delineation of possible practices that could be implemented in the field of psychological science.
