Abstract This research will focus on interpreting and combining ecological processes and mechanisms described in the current ecological literature in the tropics with the results from spatio-temporal analysis under two perspectives: I) How is vegetation distribution in tropical South American changing in time? How do climatic extremes and human-induced disturbances contribute to these changes?; II) Is there multi-stability at different spatial scales? Which interactions and processes work on each scale?
