Abstract This paper aims to develope an arguing about the ideology of José Pedro Varela (1845-1879) and his proposition of an educational reform in the XIX century warlord Uruguay, from an Intelectual History point of view. What is offered is, by means of Quentin Skinner and John G. A. Poccock's concept of intentionality, to relate Varela's political ideas with the majors debates and publications made by himself during the period of time he has worked on the issue of publical instruction in Uruguay. This idea starts from the assumption that, by means of the educational propositions stablished by him, there is a wider political intention that claimed for the implementation of the democracy and individual liberties that are related to the popular participation rights and political conscientiousness of this latin-american country population. Beyond that, it goes from the presupposition that, by means of Varela's proposals, there is an idea of how Uruguay should be in terms of political modernization and social stability. In order that "such project of Uruguay" may be unrevealed from his writings some of the author's journal writings will be used, in the same way that his masterpieces Legislação escolar and A Educação do Povo. Similarly, some of his contemporary writings will be used, such as Carlos Maria Ramirez and Francisco Antonio Berro, in order to reach a bigger comprehension of the disputes about the educational matter and, consequently, about the Uruguayan nation project inserted in it. | |
