Abstract

Mayaro virus is an arbovirus belonging to genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae. It is the etiological agent of Mayaro fever, a dengue-like febrile syndrome. One of the landmarks of this disease is a highly debilitating arthralgia that can persist for months. Another alphavirus, Chikungunya virus is responsible for several outbreaks in Asia, Africa and Oceania, in addition to case reports in Europe. Although restricted to forested areas, it is probable that higher numbers of Mayaro fever cases in the coming years due to the increased number of people inhabiting or making use of these areas. The development of a vaccine is essential to prevent future outbreaks that this virus may cause. Much of the knowledge about MAYV pathology are generalizations based on other alphavirus. An attenuated virus was developed. This virus may be used as a vaccine and help in understanding of the MAYV pathology. This project is intended to assess the immune response elicited by this vaccine candidate in animal models, supplying the required information for the development of this vaccine and increasing the knowledge about the Mayaro fever immunology.
