Abstract

Based on the observation that there is a gap in academic studies on samba, especially regarding the participation of black women, we aim to map out the trajectory of a black lesbian samba performer and songwriter, currently also a state representative in São Paulo: Leci Brandão. Using semi structured interviews and the analysis of song lyrics, we seek to problematize how the binary division of masculinities and femininities, as well as other social markers of difference such as gender, race and sexuality appear intertwined in her speeches and narratives of her own experiences.
