Abstract

Research has investigated the performance of individuals who stutter in verbal dichotic listening tests in order to investigate changes related to hemispheric dominance for language. The results are controversial; some studies have shown lack of the right ear advantage during the undirected attention task, while others have found no differences between the pattern of lateralization for this group and the control group. Methodological differences between studies as stimuli parameters, task type and participant characteristics are pointed out as possible explanation for the contradictory results. Based on these differences, this research will focus on how different parameters related to the tests can influence the performance of individuals who stutter. Thus, the aim of the research is to investigate the performance of individuals who stutter and control group in verbal dichotic listening tests, from different paradigms: " stimulus type (digits x syllables)", "task type (directed attention x undirected attention)" and "cognitive demand (number of pairs shown)". It is expected that the group of individuals who stutter present atypical performance, compared with the control group, in terms of laterality, and these differences between groups should be more pronounced for certain tasks such as the major cognitive demand tasks or directed attention tasks.
