Abstract

The research proposed in this project falls within the scope of a study of family relations, focusing more specifically on marital relations. Therefore, this is a multifaceted issue, especially in the current times, in which the arrangements and dynamic interaction of couples are experienced with much larger freedom and diversity of possibilities relative to old patterns. This study follows the approach of analytical psychology and aims to investigate the characteristics and the main difficulties experienced in these relationships. Although in general it appears that marriage is experiencing a time of crisis, this research hypothesizes that the marital relationship is a strong aspiration even for contemporary men and women and that this may indicate its archetypal character. Facing a theme loaded with complexity, it was decided to adopt an approach that not only takes into account the emerging symbols in the narratives of the participants, but also the symbols that are expressed in the couple's home. This is seen as a possible field of relevant symbols that refer to experiences in the constitution of conjugal relationship. The proposed research is essentially qualitative, as it seeks to have access to the subjectivity of the participants. Therefore, this case study was chosen because it allows a detailed analysis of the object to be studied. Thus, a procedure will be conducted to collect through regular interviews with participants. The interviews will be done monthly for six months and therefore there will be six meetings with the participant couple. The interviews will be open interviews and will primarily focus on the experiences of married life, difficulties, strengths and challenges. There will also be opportunities to explore facts, insights and experiences that relate to the constitution of the couple's home. The participants in this study will be a couple, a man and a woman, who haves no children, aged up to 35 years and who live together on a formal basis - married or unmarried. All the material collected will be analyzed within the symbolic and archetypal process that considers, based on reference indicated by Jung, that the symbol is the psychic phenomenon par excellence that allows us access to unconscious contents. It is expected that in this way to deepen the knowledge of this theme and bring a significant contribution to the understanding of issues that are central to the context of the work of the psychologist.
