Abstract

The Japanese Christian mission during the Modern Age had, in its beginning, a great and quick ascension thanks to the large number of converts and the consenting from the Japanese central authorities that were struggling to have the country under control since it was in a big civil war since the late's XV. However, contrary to the expectations, the peace that came in the Edo Period - under the Tokugawa regime - was fatal to the Christian mission and its followers. In 1614, the mission was officially closed and the Christian religion was prohibited. The insistence of some Jesuits and Franciscans to continue proselytizing in Japan, forced the authorities to close Japan to foreigner contact. The way and the reason why the Japanese authorities conducted the repression on the Christians (European or Japanese), together with the repercussion that the Christian religion had for the Japanese, either they accepted or no the foreigner religion, in the various social circles in the Tokugawa Japan (Japanese neophytes, Buddhist monks, Confucian writers and popular literature), and the quarrels between Jesuits and Franciscans, while they were trying to be accepted by the Japanese authorities and proselytize, are the main subjects of this investigation.
