Abstract

This project is fully linked to thematic project Biota/FAPESP (# 2010/50188-8), which one of subareas is directed to study of species intentionally or accidentally explored by shrimp fishery, as the crab Libinia ferreirae, focus of the presented study. The proposal of this project is to investigate the population ecology of this crab in Southeastern coast of São Paulo state. Specifically, it will be verified: the association of this species with the jellyfish Lychnorhiza lucerna, besides other epizoic relationships; the spatiotemporal distribution of demographic groups related to environmental factors; the reproductive biology; the structure and population growth; and feeding habits. The monthly samplings of crabs and environmental parameters started in June/12 and finished in July/14, and were performed by a shrimp boat equipped with trawl nets, in the coast of Cananéia/SP. The individuals will be identified in relation to sex, measured and separated in young, adults and reproductive adults. The body dimensions of the associated crab and their host jellyfish will be measured and related by linear regressions. The maturity size will be calculated under gonadal and morphometric approach and the growth will be estimated by the von Bertalanffy equation. The feeding habits of L. ferreirae will be analysed according to the volume of the stomach, frequency of occurrence and methods of points for food items. The results to be obtained are of extreme importance, since this species is indirectly explored by trawling fishery without any studies that aim to understand its ecology. (AU)
