Abstract

This project focus on the memory as an attempt of identity unity in the novel´s structure Nove Noites (2002) by Bernardo Carvalho. The novel´s narrator tells about something that he didn´t experienced: the suicide of the American anthropologist Buell H. Quain. Thus, he searches for memories able to solve the motive(s) that carry to the suicide, unexplained for more than 60 years. Through missives, photographs and report told by people had met the anthropologist, is produced a voice choral trying to find out the reason behind this act. To understand the memories as other voices, we supported our work on Discurso da Narrativa, de Gérard Genette (1995). Because they started as other voices, fragmenting the narrative structure order, allow us relate them with identity questions. For that we supported ourselves on A identidade cultural na pós-modernidade, by Stuart Hall (2006), to understand the identity as integrated in the narrative structures. We´d presented our main theoretical basis and we demarcate as goals: a) making clear the memory as identity tool of narrators and characters; b) discussing the contrast between history time and speech time and between me and other; c) understanding the cultural identity with the focalization codes; d) describing the memories presence constituting the cultural identity as a contemporary Brazilian literature feature.
