Abstract

Even though it was described 100 years ago by Carlos Chagas (1909), Chagas disease still represents a major public health problem. Currently, a number of researches have been developed as well as there are only two effective drugs for the treatment of the disease but none of these treatments meet the precepts of a good drug in accordance with the criteria of the World Health Organization's. Essential oils are mixtures of volatile lipophilic substances produced by plants aromatic as part of their special metabolism. Besides its ecological importance and economic, essential oils have been investigated for their activities biological, especially antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and insecticide. Thus, there is need to encourage research on these substances, not just the need to identify himself, but mainly by the possibility of find a pharmacologically active substance, which could eventually be used in treatment of Chagas disease safely. Thus, this project aims explore the biological potential (antiparasitic) Essential oils from Chenopodium ambrosoides, Commiphora myrrha and Melissa officinalis through an evaluation of trypanocidal and cytotoxic activity.
