Abstract

This project has as its central objective the study of the filling of the position of Judge of the Orphans in the village of São Paulo, besides discussing the operation of the judiciary at the overseas. Dialoguing with the historiography on the topic in the Portuguese Empire, we intend to discuss the dynamics of the election of Judge of the Orphans, showing trends and characteristics of obtaining the position as well as its performance and conflict in colonial society. The clipping will occur between 1731-1800, a period that begins with the rules of its court in Brazil, due to population increase throughout the South Centre; and runs through the course of the eighteenth century, following the consolidation of the judicial network in Brazil before, during and after the reforms of Pombal.
