Abstract

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala-azar is a parasitic disease widely spread worldwide. Over the last decade, the number of cases and the geographical distribution of VL have increased considerably in Brazil, present in 26 states, and 19 of them reported the confirmation of human cases. Thus, currently, the LV is an important public health problem in the country. Objective: To describe in time and space , the expansion of the vector Lutzomyia longipalpis and VL in humans and canines in the State of São Paulo , from 1997 to 2013.Material and Methods: The study area comprises 645 municipalities in the state of São Paulo, with a population of 41,252,160 inhabitants. Data of the entomological situation of the vector Lu. longipalpis will be utilized as well as data concerning the situation of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) and data from autochthonous cases and deaths by Human Visceral Leishmaniasis (HVL) in the state of São Paulo , from 1997 until 2013 . Thematic maps will be built, year by year representing the evolution of the occupation of the municipalities of the state of São Paulo by the vector Lu. longipalpis and the expansion of occurrence of CVL and HVL.
