Abstract

The seagrass beds are ecosystems with great importance for the coastal zone, characterized as the most productive ecosystems on Earth. In addition to its role as providing habitat for a wide variety of species, favoring coastal stability and producing organic matter for marine trophic web, these ecosystems have been recognized by the huge capacity to store organic carbon in its soils and are, therefore, priorities for the mitigation of increased carbon in the atmosphere. Recently, the term Blue Carbon was created to designate the organic C accumulated in seagrass beds, as well as other coastal wetlands, due to the important role of these coastal areas on the global C dynamic. Despite the importance of the seagrasses beds, too little is known about the soils where these ecosystems are inserted and which edaphic mechanisms promote the C accumulation in these environments. Thus, this research project aims to generate information about the biogeochemistry, genesis and classification of the soils from Brazilian seagrass bed in order to understand the mechanisms that lead to soil C accumulation in these areas and to verify changes in soil characteristics and carbon accumulation due to climatic and vegetation differences, in order to provide a basis for understanding this ecosystem and assisting policy of protection and use of these coastal areas.
