Abstract

The characterization of the gait movement pattern is commonly performed for the comprehension of the gait changes related to ageing, diseases and training. The gait biomechanical analysis has been often and successfully applied to enhance the understanding about the human movement patterns. The main purpose of this project is to study the gait of young adults and elderly individuals, with the following specific purposes: 1. Study the effect of gait velocity on gait biomechanical variables in young adults and elderly individuals; 2. Study the contribution of muscle forces, using computer musculoskeletal simulation models, to the gait under different velocities in young adults and elderly individuals; 3. Investigate the influence of gait velocity on indices well established in the literature such as Gait Deviation Index (GDI) and Gait Profile Score (GPS); 4. Implement a public database consisting of gait data from both experimental data collection and simulation studies. In addition, the present project will have an international collaboration of the Prof. Richard Baker from University of Salford, with the aim of enhancing and improving the current biomechanical and clinical knowledge related to gait. Therefore, this project pretends to improve the assertiveness of the gait analysis while allowing the scientific community access to the public database. (AU)
