Abstract

Brazil has distinguished itself over the years as one of the major global players in the agribusiness sector, segment that accounts for nearly one third of the Gross National Product (GDP). The increasing demand for food, especially for populous countries such as China, and India, represents an opportunity, although little explored, for internationalization of Brazilian agrifood companies. Although the theme "internationalization of emerging countries" has become increasingly recurrent in studies of international business, there are several uncertainties that need to be better explored, especially those related to specific sectors of the economy. To do so, seeking to contribute to the construction of theories of internationalization, specifically the agrifood sector, this exploratory study aims to empirically identify, applying a qualitative approach and multiple case studies, the core competences determinants for internationalization of Brazilian agrifood multinationals, and to investigate their forms of development. Thus, the results of this study might be used to propose public and private policies that provide increasing of the competitiveness as well as the number of successful cases of internationalization of Brazilian agrifood multinationals.
