Abstract

In a production experiment conducted by Vivanco (2014), several word orders were attested in subject and object relative clauses of Karitiana (Tupi-Arikém). The head (the relativized NP) occupies many positions in these constructions, inclining us to say that each of these word orders has a different status inside this language. Considering the literature on this type of language, this research aims to investigate which factors determine the word order in these environments. Specifically, the impact of the following factors will be investigated: information structure, definiteness/specificity, animacy hierarchy, person hierarchy, prosody, and sociolinguistic factors.
