Abstract

The First World War (1914-1918) not only mobilized the warring nations in the battlefields but it was also waged in air and on the sea. The usage of new technologies in order to conquer the enemy was a mark of The Great War. However, it is necessary to highlight that besides the industry, the conflict also mobilized the press, forming itself as a proper moment for the periodical publications to take position and to enter combat in defense of groups and ideals. In Brazil, even before the end of impartiality, which only occurred three years after the beginning of the hostilities, the ally field had already been chosen. O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper was not absent from the debate and the ideologies mobilized around the War. In addition, by the pen of Júlio Mesquita, the paper director, it provided interpretations of the conflict to the readers. The pieces from the morning director published under the title Boletim Semanal da Guerra, tracked the four years of the conflagration week by week, which extended itself far beyond what the contemporaneous expected and ended up by involving nations that were distant from the European continent. This research aims to analyse all the reports wrote by Júlio Mesquita in a systematic way in order to check how his texts, which were written as the events were taking place, built a certain reading of the War according to the ongoing transformations in the active international scenario of that time. As a result, this research intends to contribute to the understanding of the stance taken by the Estado, which was one of the main newspapers of the country, to face the First World War. (AU)
