Abstract

Although the silver diamine fluoride have demonstrated good results in arresting caries lesions, its use in Brazil has been low. Maybe, its use may be underestimated for some indications today. Therefore, this proposal aims to verify the real possibility of increasing the use of silver diamine fluoride in clinical practice for arresting enamel caries lesions in erupting first permanent molars. For this, a randomized controlled trial, with parallel groups, will be performed to compare the diammine silver fluoride vs. cross-toothbrushing technique on occlusal surfaces of first erupting permanent molars. A placebo will be used on those who are in the group in which the toothbrushing is the active treatment. The subjects will be examined at baseline and after 6, 12 and 18 months. The progression of caries lesions into dentine will be considered as the primary endpoint. Visual examination will be used to detect caries using ICDAS. Other outcomes such as the childs discomfort, the acceptability duration and cost of of the treatments will be also evaluated. Social and biological data possibly related to the effectiveness of the techniques will be collected and analyzed. Multilevel statistical analyses will be conducted to verify the effectiveness of 30% silver diamine fluoride and possible factors associated with its effectiveness. The reported discomfort treatment satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness will be also compared between the treatments. (AU)
