Abstract

This research aims to study some financial aspects of the Lisbon inquisition court. For this study, will be used the financial documentation of the Lisbon court as a source. Relative 1539-1580 (available on the digital collection of the Tombo Tower). Through this analysis, we will try to draw up a chronology of the finances of the Lisbon court, to be able to observe the impact of the confiscations on all the rents of the Holy Office, considering that the practice of confiscation was an important instrument for the balance of the finances. Thus, through the investigation of the books of income and expenses, as well as subsidiary relevant documentation, is intended to understand the strategies used by the inquisitorial institution to balance their revenue, standing as a strong institution and self-sustainable within the institutions of the portuguese old regime.
