Abstract

This essay aims to study how changes in metabolic processes associated with aging affect the immune system of mice. Sixty-seven animals will be used, with seven separate groups according to the following criteria: infected or uninfected, control or ibuprofen diet and young or old mice. Twenty-nine mice will be subjected to infection by inhalation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. All animals will have blood collected and separated, serum will follow deproteinization and then will be subject to Nuclear Magnetic Spectroscopy. The data generated will be analyzed using multivariate statistical and correlated with metabolic processes associated with TB infection. Finding potential biomarkers related to Tuberculosis can also provide a better diagnostic tool than the currently used (tuberculosis skin test) and thereby determine the potential of an individual with Mtb progress to active and transmissible disease.
