Abstract

This project deals with an analysis of the Gesta Hammaburgensis Ecclesiae Pontificum of Adam of Bremen under the perspective of a Vorstellungsgeschichte. It is intended to investigate the Christianization process in Scandinavia in the High Middle Ages, aiming to identify and understand underlying concepts to the historiographical work of Adam. Such a perspective ap-pears as an alternative in a context marked by exhausting discussions. At the same time it is in-tended to investigate how the presence of a new (Christian) religion is used in medieval chronic as a legitimacy argument for kingly power in a context of political reorganization and centralization in medieval Scandinavia. The contributions aimed by this project to the current discussions on this theme are thought in multiple levels, from the gain of new perspectives to the cultural and political use of historiography, passing through the questions around opinions and positions con-temporary to the narrated facts, arriving last at the introduction of new methodological contribu-tions in the current academic scenario.
