Long-term three-dimensional morphometric evaluation of the pharynx in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after maxillomandibular advancement surgery

Abstract

The obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a progressive disease and that is gaining great attention of the health area due to the serious co-morbidities associated to it. Several works in the literature have pointed maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) as the most effective surgical treatment for OSA, with success rates of 96 to 100, but there are important aspects in the evaluation of long-term results of this surgery that need to be further clarified. The aim of this study is to perform an evaluation of long-term follow-up of the results of the surgery MMA in patients with OSA, aiming to locate and quantify the anatomic changes that have occurred in these patient's pharynx, performing a three-dimensional analysis of the upper airway (UA), as well as assessing the effects of surgery in polysomnographic parameters and clinical symptoms. The data regarding the patients enrolled in the study will be analyzed in three moments: preoperatively, postoperatively (six months after surgery) and long-term follow-up (greater than one year after the surgery). The purpose of this study is to verify the stability of the results obtained, contributing to the establishment of the criteria that can serve as a reference for professionals who treat OSA. (AU)
