Abstract

The objective of this project is to propose, as part of doctoral research, an internship at Columbia University in New York, to investigate the role of the controversial North American entrepreneur and urban planner Robert Moses in São Paulo. Moses was hired by the City Hall of São Paulo in the early 1950s to develop a major project of urban reform, and his hiring was subject of intense debate among São Paulo's intellectuals linked to studies on cities. This moment of Moses trajectory conforms an interesting episode to be discussed in the doctoral work because "concretizes" in one case the three main persecuted theoretical problems: the discursive production of representations of the future of the city of São Paulo; the relation of these representations with the São Paulo's intellectual field; and the relationship of these representations with the "production of the city", both symbolically and materially. Furthermore, the expectation is to examine the representations of São Paulo produced in the USA, especially in 1954, when São Paulo completed 400 years and had claim to a large international visibility.
