Abstract

Blindness and visual impairment are considered an important public health problem. For the World Health Organization ( WHO ) ,a person is considered blind when presenting visual acuity (VA ) less than0.05 in the best eye ( Snellen ) , as well as visual impairment (low vision ) is defined as visual acuity less than0.10 in the best eye with best optical correction. If there is severe visual loss in one eye, the person is not considered blind, but with a blind eye (one eye) .The annual incidence of visual impairment due to senile cataract is 2-3cases per 1,000 people, according to WHO data. Cataract is responsible for approximately 50% of blindness in Brazil. Patients with a blind eye are often found in practice Ophthalmic and represent a challenge due to the higher prevalence of ocular comorbidities compared with patients with potential look in both eyes . When one eye patient develops cataract in the only functional eye, ophthalmologists may be reluctant to recommend cataract surgery because any surgical complications may cause bilateral blindness. But the problem goes beyond being necessary to work in a multidisciplinary nature, especially in people with monocular vision. Thus, it is possible that people who for some reason do not have visual potential in one eye (one eye) , and need to be submitted to cataract surgery in the only functional eye, exhibit behavior distinguished intraoperatively and different opinions about the eye problem and its treatment of those with visual potential in both eyes , which can complicate the surgical treatment .Therefore, an observational, analytical ,comparative and cross study will be held about two groups titled Group 1 (single eye- 22 patients) and Group 2 (control group - 19 patients). The study will be conducted in a university hospital in the city of Santo André, SP, Brazil. Sociodemographic data, anesthetics and surgical methods, best corrected visual acuity before and after surgery will be collected and perioperative complications.
